Heritage Omaha has released new renderings of a planned public market overlooking Heartland of America Park at The RiverFront, set to open in summer 2028.

Crews have begun work on the three-story, 50,000-square-foot building that will be nestled into a hill overlooking the park at South 8th and Farnam streets, according to the project website.

Site plans show the indoor market will be surrounded by outdoor event spaces and community gathering areas, including an event lawn, an event terrace, and two plazas.

Inside, visitors can expect a market floor hosting dozens of vendors, programming areas, rentable event spaces, a teaching kitchen, and seating.

“The market will provide a vibrant destination for people to gather while shopping from local small businesses selling a variety of fresh, prepared, and specialty foods as well as locally-made goods,” reads the website.

Heritage Omaha, the nonprofit that’s spearheading the project, released the visuals on Oct. 6 while announcing a new executive director for the public market: Jerrica Marshall.

Heritage Omaha described Marshall as “an expert in creating vibrant public spaces.” She has served as executive director of The Directors Council in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as manager of the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market.

Founded in 1989, Heritage Omaha has developed a number of philanthropic projects around the city such as the Omaha Central Library, the Kiewit Luminarium, and Siena Francis House.

Working with Project for Public Spaces, Heritage Omaha began engaging the community in 2025 to learn what residents would like to see included in a public market project, publishing the results here.

The market will open year-round. No vendors have yet been announced, though the market will partner with locally owned and operated businesses selling a variety of goods, including fresh and prepared foods.

The site will be bordered by South 8th Street to the west, Farnam Promenade and Skate Ribbon to the north, Heartland of America Park at The RiverFront to the east, and Conagra Lake to the south.
