The City of Omaha’s offering to pick up your yard waste for free

The free yard waste pickup curbside program is currently underway until Dec.

Fall is officially here, and if you live near any trees, you already know what that means: It’s yard-waste season.

Maybe the leaves aren’t piling up on you just yet but they will be soon, and Omaha Solid Waste Management offers relief in the form of free yard-waste pickup from now until Dec. 4.

During this six-week period, which started on Oct. 26, waste management crews will pick up yard waste for free and take it to the Oma-Gro composting facility. While this is a separate pickup from trash, it takes place on your regular collection day.

Here’s what else to know about how to make sure the pickup goes smoothly.

For all those weeks of the year when the city isn’t offering no-cost pickup, you’re expected to place yard waste into your black-lid garbage cart with the rest of your trash. If it doesn’t fit, you can purchase yard waste stickers to place on brown bags full of excess yard waste or unbagged bundles of twigs and branches.

Stickers are no longer necessary during the free yard-waste pickup period. Just be sure to use the proper brown bag. Plastic bags pose a danger to waste management crews. And don’t go trying to stuff all your excess yard waste in the bin so that it overflows; you’ll risk having both your trash and yard waste left on the curb.

You can find yard-waste bags at many grocery stores and home improvement centers around Omaha, including Hy-Vee, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply Co., among others. Consult this list of locations that sell yard-waste stickers in Omaha to find spots that will almost certainly also have bags in stock.

Note that bundles of brush will still need a sticker to be picked up. Check the list linked above if you need one.

You can also bring your yard waste straight to the Oma-Gro production facility, where staff will take it free of charge for composting. The facility recently moved to 6502 S. 60th St., the former site of the Al Veys ballfields.

The facility currently operates on winter hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fall free yard-waste pickup period is one of two the city offers throughout the year. The next will take place in spring. Visit the website for more information.
