Attorney General denies conflict of interest in petition fraud case linked to campaign consultant

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers is standing by his office’s involvement in a petition fraud case currently under investigation in Lancaster County. The petition campaign is linked to the political consulting firm Axiom Strategies. Jessica Flanagain, one of Axiom’s partners, is consulting with Hilgers on his 2026 reelection campaign. Hilgers told reporters on Wednesday, Aug. 26 that he delegated operational control of the case within his office to his chief deputy and criminal prosecution chief, but is not otherwise recusing himself.  “There’s no reason for me to recuse myself,” Hilgers said. “I will follow the law, and we will do what’s needed to be done.”
