Omaha boxer Melanie Timko is stepping into the ring Friday with a chance to make Nebraska history. According to KETV 7, Timko will become the first woman in the state to compete for a championship boxing title, fighting for WBA and NABA title belts in her weight class. Timko started boxing a decade ago at Omaha’s Jackson’s Boxing Club, initially as a hobby and a way to stay in shape. Now, she’ll headline what KETV reports is the promoter’s first women’s main event — a milestone Timko hopes will inspire the next generation of female boxers.
